| PASTORA GALVÁN DE LOS REYES (Seville, 1980)
Daughter of José Galván, Pastora’s blood has the long pedigree of her home dances and the modernity of her brother’s, Israel Galván, a genius in the most praiseworthy avant-garde of Flamenco. She’s herself a recognized prestigious dancer, since she won the Matilde Coral prize at the Cordoba National Contest of Flamenco Art in 2001.
From 1990 to 1998, she did the degree in Spanish dance at the Conservatory of Seville, while she started doing her first professional works. Early in 1995, at the age of 15, she traveled for the first time to USA with the Company of Flamenco Theatre of San Francisco. The next year gave lessons at the Stanford University and performed in France with Israel Galván’s company. Since then, she never stopped teaching and touring all over the world with different companies or herself as leading dancer. She has danced in the most important Spanish theatres and tablaos, and in many cities in Europe, Japan, USA, Middle-East, Cuba… as well as she hasn’t missed none of the main flamenco and dance festivals in the world: Mont-de-Marsans in 2000; Montellano in 2002; ‘Corral del Carbón’ (Granada) in 2003; Alburquerque, Argeles-sur-Mer and Monterrey (Mexico) in 2004; ‘Flamenco in the Sun’ (Miami) in 2005; Jerez in 2006, ‘Andalucía Flamenca’ (Madrid), ‘Málaga en Flamenco’, Montpellier Danse and Granada International Festival in 2007; ‘Flamenco Festival’ (USA) and Netherlands Flamenco Biennial in 2008; Nîmes and Jerez in 2009…
The Flamenco Biennial of Seville deserves special mention, for Pastora has been present in all editions since 1998, when she took part in Israel Galván’s show Mira/Los zapatos rojos. The collaboration with his brother goes on for La Metamorfosis (2000), Galvánicas (2002), with guitar player Gerardo Núñez and Dos Hermanos (‘Brother and sister’, 2004). Even if that one was not premiered in the Biennial, we could see her in different shows, one of them with singer Chano Lobato.
But 2006 was the real challenge in her career: September 16 was premiered in the Biennial of Seville La Francesa, where she appears as unique leading dancer, performing 5 choreographies specially created for her by Israel Galván and with artistic direction by Pedro G. Romero. It was presented during 2007 in such important dates as the Andalucía Flamenca Festival organized by the Andalousian Flamenco Developpement Agency in Madrid, the prestigious Jerez Flamenco Festival, the international dance festival Montpellier Danse and the Granada International Festival. The success was resounding: audience and specialized journalists acclaimed unanimously her work. When she came back to Seville with La Francesa in 2008 (Joaquín Turina hall), everyone remained speechless.
In the Biennial’s last edition in 2008, she danced together with Israel as special guests in Pedro Sierra’s Tres movimientos. That year she had been called to participate in a show for the Flamenco Festival (USA), Cuatro Esquinas, together with Carmen Linares, Miguel Poveda and guitar player Juan Carlos Romero. And new territories were ‘conquered’ with her Cuadro Flamenco, that she brought to the Spring Festival in El Cairo and Beyrouth.
In the course of her career she has worked with such great artists as Eva Yerbabuena, Fernando Terremoto, La Susi, Niño de Pura, María Pagés, José Luis Rodríguez, Arcángel, Joaquín Grilo, La Tobala, Pedro Sierra… For its special meaning we can mention her collaborations with Carmen Linares in La Diosa Blanca, where all interpreters where women and Las mujeres en el flamenco (women in flamenco), both in 2005. Or Los Grandes (the big ones), where Antonio Canales joined a few young big flamenco artists. Nowadays, she’s working frequently with pianist and composer from Lebrija David Peña Dorantes in his show Piano Flamenco.
Her lively spirit and irrepressible energy drives her to go continuously into new projects and artistic adventures. So in her lasts works: a solo show for the innovative Flamenc Empiric festival in Barcelona and her new creation Pastora, premiered in the flamenco festival of Jerez, where tradition and vanguard live together.
